After the second world war most European cities were in ruins and priority went on building millions of homeless people a new place to live rather than painstakingly recreating all of the ancient buildings and monuments that were lost. Medieval city layouts were abolished in favour of the car and this notion of a fresh slate fuelled the rise of modernism.

Architects all got depressed after WW1 and wanted to make ugly buildings since anything aesthetic is monarchist and imperialist and fuck the monarchy.
Then Jews take over Architecture after WW2 and do their schtick. Aesthetic buildings are now racist.
Fast forward to today and architects can't stop sperging about CAD software that allows them to do crazy constructions with tons of glass. Previously they had to do the whole static thing by hand but now the software does it for them, so they go absolutely fucking bonkers with it.
Here's hoping they get over it and make aesthetic shit again.

Canada has heritage laws that give tax incentives if you keep older buildings in tact. What ends up happening is they typically just put the brick or stone cladding for the first floor and then a modern apartment on top and it gets big tax breaks. You get shit like this pic as your new buildings.
