How does a countries success in internation sports effect national relations?

For example: with the most recent world cup (or in any international sports tournament) is there any difference between how a country perceives another purely based on how those teams or individuals performed in said event?
do the stereotypes influence different cultures relations with each other and if so, how?

Pic only somewhat related
