The outcome of a war always changes how historical figures are viewed. Had the Confederacy won, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, etc. would be widely revered today, they would be the Confederate States of America's version of George Washington.

The Confederate States take Washington, take Lincoln hostage and force him to sign an agreement to the secession. Two republics are formed. Abolitionists continue to wail and clamor in the North, forcing the Union to free the slaves around 1865 - 1870. Freed slaves and runaways stream to New York, Chicago, Baltimore by the thousands. By 1890, this has become a massive crime problem, leading some of the Western territories like Nevada, Oregon, Montana etc. to join the Confederacy in fear of negro migration.
Through industrialization and the negro population breeding, international slave trade dries up by 1900, and by 1950 agriculture is so far mechanized, that slaves aren't needed anymore. They still don't get equal rights in the South, but they're free to move north, which is what they do by the millions. However that now only concerns a handful of 80 year old niggers that were simply too old to move to the North when given the opportunity.
