It's overblown. Any short-term economic pain would be at least as bad for Ireland as the UK. Most foreign trade already takes place under the basic WTO framework.
The best scenario is a decent amount of short & medium term pain, but overall a clean break and adopting a unilateral free trade stance. The Trump view of trade as a zero sum game doesn't have any support on the left or right in the UK.
