There are two factors going on.
1) An increase in diagnoses in autism. More and more kids are being tested AND the requirements for being on the "autistic spectrum" is becoming wider and wider. That means lots of kids that 40 years ago would just have been called "Odd" or "Withdrawn" are now given an armband. It's the same thing as ADD. Before, they were just full of energy. Now they need to be forced onto medication. The amount of people who have these "symptoms" are the same. It's just that the diagnoses are becoming broader.
Any system that profits from a problem will find ways to see that problem everywhere.

2) People like cause and effect. They like explanations to why things happen. And right now, autism, I mean real fucking retarded autism and not just "He doesn't have any friends and likes watching anime", doesn't have an explanation. Autism is a "syndrome" not a disease. Syndromes are just a collection of symptoms that correlate together (Down's Syndrome is now a misnomer since we know that it's due to a chromosomal duplication).
No one knows what causes autism. But people, especially parents of autists, really want to know why. Is it their fault? Do they have bad genes? If I have more kids, will they have the 'tism too? Is it something I hate? Is it in the environment? When people have kids, they lose, at least, 30 IQ. Totally retarded when it comes to their kids. That's why there are so many Amerimutt mothers screaming that it HAS to be vaccines that made their kid autismo. And science doesn't have any other explanation for them to latch onto. So pseduo-science picks up the slack.
