I think humanity is the only life capable of artificially evolving itself and that ability was not a mistake. We are expected to. It'll be a very bumpy road full of degeneracy, but we wouldn't have the capacity for abstract thought and invention if we weren't supposed to use it. Eventually we will collectively become God, our God can retire, and we will create our own children in our own image like He did for us.
