Food microbiologist here, let me clear this up. By "tainted with poop", they mean the lettuce has coliform bacteria (bacteria present in fecal matter). Lettuce is never hear treated, so animals walk through the fields dropping their shit on the plants. And the lettuce really only gets sprinkled with water to clean it. This is likely linked to the romaine lettuce E. coli outbreak we saw out of Yuma, AZ earlier this year.

If it's multiple stores where people get sick, it's a supply issue. If it's one store, it's an employee sanitation issue. Happy to answer any questions.

There's not a ton of redpills to be had. One of the harder things to swallow is the importance of knowing your food's sources. Shellfish harvested during an algal bloom can literally paralyze you for life about 2 hours after ingestion. Luckily the FDA and USDA do a pretty good job with inspections and regulations. Also Sonny Perdue is doing a really good job at protecting farmers and consumers.

I think the main three things to watch out for in the next 2 decades are:
-farming will become almost entirely drone operated
-international food trade will take a major protectionist shift. this can be good because we produce so damn much of the world's food that they're going to be on the defending side of negotiations. farmers will survive because they already get fucking subsidies just to breathe, but that's worth it for a national security concern.
-we're not going to have the foods we grew up with. beef is unreasonably inefficient to grow, and with the scale that any of the meats are produced, you're far more likely to let out a contaminated product. unfortunately, onions and groups like them are pushing hard to popularize these "all in one" meal drinks. it's really only going to take until millennials are 40+ that these are going to hit hard, because younger generations are much more prone to making decisions on "sustainability". it's a noble cause, but once it hits full swing, it'll feel like some 1984 government rationed nutrient supplement to keep you available to work.

A lot of the food trends we're going to see will revolve around resource conservation. The main growing regions are the western column (california to washington), the central column (oklahoma to n dakota), and the eastern column (florida to roughly massachussetts). Other regions make plenty of their own food, but as far as national and world supply go, these are the big players. Right now the western column is getting fucked by fire and drought. They mainly do leafy greens, nuts, berries, and melons. As the Communist Republic or California continues to fuck itself out of a water supply, we might have to give up walnuts, cantaloupe, and arugula. Boo hoo.
The central column gives us the power crops: onions, corn, and wheat. None of them are particularly good for you, but by golly can they make a lot of food out of it. There's been a few fires in Kansas recently that gave wheat a scare, and I believe blight hit north dakota last winter. But they're not going anywhere because they already plant too much with the expectations that A) some of it will be destroyed by natural causes and B) the USDA will pay them to destroy excess so that food prices are stable for consumers. The central column is going to see changes in their land use. People are getting more aware of what they eat, and onions and corn are going to become bad words. Corn has been talked about for a while, but since the farms have been making only corn for the past 100 years, the soil is fucked if you try to plant anything else.
Eastern column is fine, lot of meat and poultry come from here. Only things that are gonna harm this are reduction to beef cattle because of water reasons and reduction in poultry because of environmental health.

The Institute of Food Technologists is a good resource. membership is cheap, but I think you can also just subscribe to the web publication too. They cover advances in processing methods, food safety, current industry concerns and constraints, and the general health of the food industry.

Other than that, make a list of foods you eat commonly, and do a google scholar search of "food name" and safety or news. Academic journals are boring as fuck, but if you just read the abstract at the top of it, you'll get the picture.
