it's a method of money creation by way of encrypting transactions and winning a bonus for decrypting it first.
It uses more power every year due to difficulty increases in decrypting.
It spurs the GPU market since they are the good workhorses for repetitive computations on a large scale.
The original concept was proposed in the 80's and later the Bitcoin whitepaper was released under a pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, which turns out to be a truncation of the company names: Samsung Toshiba Naka Industries and Motorola. These are the companies who benefit the most out of the crypto scheme in the long run, at least that was the plan. The genesis block or first transaction donated a wealthy sum to the creator and since then people have been mining (decrypting) for scraps.
The encryption used in Bitcoin is laughable by today's standards and even password protecting your wallet can protect your investment.

sort of a catch 22 since a huge part of cryptocurrency even existing is based around anonymity, privacy, decentralization, and essentially NOT letting the government/banks control your funds
but then on the other hand there's zero chance it gains widespread adoption without being heavily regulated by government
