Typically with those houses part of the agreement for buying the land is that you pay the city all the back taxes that are owed from the last few decades. Not worth it.

I'm in the military and move every two years, basically my social life is forced on me by the military and I don't make friends with the locals. A couple times a year I'll go back to my hometown and see all my friends there, usually for the holidays, Independence Day, and maybe some time in spring or fall. I'm making mad dosh though.

Then visit a bigger city once in awhile. Nothing stopping you. You can live in a rural/suburan area and be within a few hours of major cities.

And housing literally costs 5 to 10x as much....

you can live OUTSIDE a city and still visit for concerts or whatever the fuck you want. You can live your life away from niggers other than seeing them on the subway.

But before you go jumping into a new social circle and blowing all your money on expensive drinks and shit, take the time to focus on your finances: live well within your means, pay down your debt, and get some investments. You'll be much much less stressed out when you then go out and do social things. When I did social things before I was debt free I'd be penny pinching and wouldn't want to do anything even remotely expensive. But once I got my debt paid off and had lots of disposable income, I became much more fun to be around. I just did comic con with friends and it was a blast, because we got a nice hotel close to the convention and had no problem eating good food and buying whatever we wanted. Way better than previous years where I drove two hours in each morning, spent no money, and was sleep deprived the entire time.

im like 45-60 minutes outside of Vancouver, I almost have my house paid off (5-8x cheaper than if I'd bought in Vancouver) and I can still go there often enough for events or socializing. Living in a city can make sense if you budget correctly. For example, if I worked in downtown LA, you better believe I want an apartment in downtown LA so I never ever have to drive in the area, and ideally with direct public transport access to LAX if I ever need to leave the city. You have to budget your money AND your time.

The flipside of this is children. Are you going to marry and have children in a one bedroom apartment on the 67th floor of some skyscraper? Or are you going to move out to the suburbs? There's a lot of different factors to take into account.

thats true, personality and interests play a factor too i guess. I'm a bit older now, I have zero interest in clubbing or nightlife, so being downtown in a big city isn't really appealing at all to me, but i can see someone in the 18-25 range who really loves going out and bouncing around from place to place would probably prefer being downtown versus some small town.

I've always preferred the smaller, quiet towns though myself

My wife and I don’t want to leave New England but unfortunately the houses in any of the states here are quite expensive with high taxes, even in the country towns. We live in Connecticut currently and it’s a mess. The Democrats drove it into the ground, handed out welfare like candy and screwed with our wages and our pensions. They drove big businesses out of the state, like GE, and are hedging their bets on the casinos and Naval industry. Heroin is fucking bad here too— all opioids. Anywhere you go, city or small town, is dealing with it. The casinos brought in a lot of Asians and brown people who don’t assimilate either, they just drain the system, so white flight is pretty prominent.

A lot of the small towns are seeing massive amounts of homes being snatched up by white families from the cities and a lot of retail development is springing up in these towns as well. One family I know of sold their orchards for millions back in the early 2000s so the town could have its first shopping plaza with a Walmart, Target, Home Depot, etc. Growing up, the area was all woods and farms, with one through road and a small section of town where you could find the mom and pop grocery store and some gas stations. Now it’s a major hub for this part of the state where we probably shop at least once a week.

We could move to the middle of nowhere in a place like Vermont or Maine, but, like New Hampshire, Vermont has high taxes and there is literally nothing to do in Maine outside of camping or going to Portland. Rhode Island has been a thought in our minds for a while, if only because it’s better maintained and much easier to appreciate than CT. But, again, very pricey. Massachusetts might be good too but it would have to be the Western side of the state for sure. Anywhere else is either expensive or an opioid den
