Humans are naturally omnivorous; though this doesn't mean we ought to eat both meat and veg; it simply means that we're designed to eat either. People have historically lived on diets of either or both, preferably herbivorous or omnivorous diets. Though it might be morally imperative for us to eat more plants, it's not ethically sustainable, especially at the population level we are at today; it makes no difference whether we eat meat or plants; human society is cancer regardless.
But if you are to stick to a more natural diet, I wouldn't recommend the frugivorous diet of our cousins, the chimps; they eat a lot of plants, a lot of fruit, and some bugs. They get their protein mostly from the bugs they eat, but they have been known to eat their own feces. A diet including feces is common among animals that aren't getting enough protein; the plants they eat are broken down by enzymes and bacteria in their guts to be converted into protein supplements. There are no known societies with no aversion to eating feces; our aversion to eating feces is an adaptation that prevents illnesses (possibly accompanying the diets of our ancestors). Given the dramatic jaw and dental adaptations, with our teeth becoming more slender, and our jaws becoming stronger (in proportion to its size), it's reasonable to conclude that we evolved meat-eating teeth, and that our aversion to feces (unlike the rest of our primate cousins) is due to the heavy-meat diet we adapted to. The meat supplied our brains with fats; the meats helped us conserve energy which was lost from simply digesting large amounts of greens.
