I think this is essentially accurate, but I disagree with your negative take on it overall. We all in the West value self-reliance and freedom, the ability to make it on your own, so it was impossible for us to deny women this ability when they demanded it. But the facts of family-making is that women look for a man who can provide them something they can't get themselves when they're making a family unit, and without that kind of leverage on the man's end, the woman generally won't settle. It does take away something that we would have been able to offer women, but even more important than that is the other end; it removes the pressure on women to make a choice and commit to it. You might think this just makes it possible for women to make the most responsible choice, and I'm sure this is true for at least some, but by and large it seems like this has become a license for women to not make a commitment at all. They screw around and procrastinate until the big 30 wall looms and then make a choice that's probably less good, and less free, than one they might've made in a less progressive society.

Going into the feminist uprisings there was a latent assumption that people would keep getting married at the appropriate ages and getting to the business of making families like we always have no matter what the circumstances were, but the more removed we've gotten from traditional structures and the more engaged with the hyper-liberal present, the less true this seems. Maybe the fact that people living in the early years of these social movements got it done was due purely to their proximity to traditionalism, not any inherent, resilient drive.

We dislike traditionalism for forcing us to take advantage of each other, but this is also society forcing us to live and work together, rather than living as loose, isolated atoms.
