Comparing the two is often not easy when doing so with idealogues, because socialism inevitably comes with a totalitarian ideology, and you can't really remove the rest of the ideology from the economic system. Capitalism, on the other hand, does not come from a totalitarian ideology, and so can be easily looked at apart from the ideology.
In general, however, government interference with the market is bad for the economy.

You're talking about the free market which yes, has experienced increasing regulations over the last few years, however, the US still has a very capitalistic system as it does not prohibit private and/or personal ownership over enterprises and businesses. If there is a government, certain products will be regulated (such as paedophilia). Such regulations do limit the market, but not for the sake of it, it is rather a natural outcome of the justice system. The economy can still be free, even though it hunts down pedos and murderers.
