Pretty awesome that something like uber is possible. So the uber drivers don't have to do some kind of costly course? Just have a drivers license and you're good to go if you work for uber?

That's one of the few things i can come up with that's really described as free market. It catches my surprise why the government allows it, but not for the reasons OP mentions.

Uber works because on average it is cheaper than taxis. In my city it is MUCH cheaper plus they get there quickly. Banning Uber is not a good idea - London did that and it caused them to lose hundreds of millions of pounds from the local economy while other British cities where earning more.

Driving people around for money is not a full-time job. People need to get to the airport/work in the morning from 4am-8am, to home in the evening 3pm-7pm, and out on the town for weekend nightlife on Friday and Saturday nights. There are not enough “busy” hours to support full-time wages. Uber/Lyft drivers are true moonlighters who work a day job and drive outside of 9am-4pm.

Taxis have always been slow and overpriced. I'm glad Uber/Lyft happened. The only upside about taking a cab is that they know better routes and shortcuts.
