He is, in fact, correct. First few centuries of the ottoman empire, sort of until the 1700s, our soldiers served willingly. Back then, the ottoman empire was modelled more after mongol ideals and being christian was ok, the army didnt carry out anything but regular army shit (no forced conversions). Most of the time you just got an ok salary, fought to defend/expand the empire that your own country was in and retired in your home town.

It only became islamic towards the late 1700s when being muslim was a prerequisite and the army carried out genocides and forced conversions.
