Why are whites in the USA generally not referred to as 'European Americans'?

Isn't it strange that white people are telling blacks to go back to Africa? Blacks have been in this country for centuries. Most white European ancestors came to America in the mid 19th century, late 19th century and early 20th century. Relative to blacks, most white people are foreigners.
They wouldn't be told to go back to Africa nearly as much if they were responsible, well-mannered citizens.
