The point being if northern and southern Italy didn't unite and fought together, the Austria-Hungary coalition would have run over the border brigades and took control of our industries before the Allies could've helped us. I have looked at Italy going back to pre WW2 elections up till now. There is a lot of consistency and little change. Basically 3 regions are different politically, economically and socially.

The North has the highest income, most white, has the vast majority of the big city states prior to unification that adds to local identity. Has always had strong conservatism with a libertarian streak.

The Emilia-Romagna / Tuscany region was a hot bed of communism pre Mussolini and has voted for the Left PD or similar parties since. They are less white then the North and but upper middle income.

The South is much poorer than the rest of country. Investment is difficult because of pervasive corruption that the Mafia is part responsible for. They are socially conservative but not necessarily economic conservatives. They were also the base for the Fascist party.

A few regions I colored because they dont fit the main 3 great. Abruzzo & Molise are basiclly south and really poor but Lefitst parties do much better there.

South Tyrol in the north has an indepence movement that is left wing.

Lazio kind of fits all 3 regions. It has Rome which everyone hates. The Left mostly run Rome, the Region is culturally south but out side Rome it is very economically conservative.
