Up on my deck with the treeline just five or ten feet away its almost uncomfortable. I've always kind of liked it, its the sound of summer.
I had one smash into my face, still buzzing, when I was just a wee lad, and to this day I've always considered a shotgun to be the best defence against invaders from the forest. Not even joking, that experience freaked me right the fuck out. I was only like 10 or so, and I never even saw it coming. In retrospect, it still freaks me out. Fucking cicadas, man.
We get them every year, but theres a bad wave every 17 years. I remember when I was a kid we had a year where the ground was basically blanketed by them in a lot of places.

I'm sure they perform some purpose in nature, but it only took one experience with them to freak me out and cause me to fear them, unlike niggers, which took about 3 experiences for me to hate them.
