It doesn't matter how well the economy is doing if you spend money like a horny drunk at a brothel. They've been buying other mattress companies at quite the pace and keeping stores that are just down the block from other stores open. Not a great way to save money.

There is some troubling economic news, the wealth gap in America is the largest since before the great depression, boomers are filing for bankruptcy in record numbers. Has nothing to do with that. Mattress Firm was in the process of buying many other mattress dealers and local locations, which frequently would be nearby or even neighboring competitors. When they first bought those companies, they didn't immediately rebrand to maintain customer bases, but over time they did. All the purchases probably didn't help them when it came to accumulating tons of debt they clearly can't pay off.
