South Portugal is the land beyond the Tagus river that was conquered to the moors between the XII and XIII century. It is divided in two regions: Alentejo and Algarve. Algarve is okay mostly so we don't make fun of Algarve people. Also, few of them are native Algarvians as many people have settled there (including dirty Gypsies and some scummy Brits). The Alentejo however is very hot and mostly dry, with temperatures of 40ºC or above being normal.
Both regions are rather sparsely populated but Alentejo is a third of the country in size and only has 5% of the population.
With 40ºC being normal, based Alentejans enjoy their "sesta" (as in sleeping after lunch) and they don't work during the summer (traditionally, ideally at least) except for early mornings and late afternoons. That makes people North of the Teagus make fun of them by calling them lazy.
Alentejans also have great food. They always enjoy their wine, they are great chill people. They are darker than average most of the time but their moorish ancestry is a meme.
Now the bad part:
Alentejo was very sparsely populated and during the Reconquista the local people were mostly relegated to the lower class. There were waves of people from Northern Portugal and Galiza that became both the upper class and a good chunk of the middle class (if there was any). This persisted up to the present and in Alentejo, contrary to most of the country, the population lives in one town here and another town a few miles away. The lands were mostly divided between large land owners from the North or the Religious orders who fought the moors. Most Alentejans in a town used to work in the fields for a lord. They were shit poor.

Fast forward to XIX century. Alentejo becomes the Wild West again because the Traditionalist faction loses the war but remains strong in Alentejo. Criminal gangs are ripe and the state can't contain it. Land lords have their own sort of armies... etc. that originates even more poverty.
Fast forward to the XX century, they lived in poverty so they became the most communist region as they mostly felt abandoned by Catholicism when they lost the war in the XIX century. They are still communist central because the commies got to power in the 70s through a coup and gave land in the Alentejo to the communists.
They are a very aged population as most young Alentejans with a future need out of it. It is a great region though with great people. You'll just have to deal with the communism.

In porto, the natives are usually more dark skinned and darker hair than those in the south. But in the north there are many families that come from Asturias and Galicia that have actually lighter skin that and lighter eyes

That has been happened since it was conquered. But it got harder in the 1950s (not to mention during the XV century era of the discoveries...)
Just consider that tiny little Sivles was one of the largest cities of Algarve before the Portuguese conquest.
And that the Religeous Orders and the King(s) offered privileges for the Portuguese to settle the Algarve afraid that the Spaniards would take it easily.
