It's hard to say. Was the society of old better BECAUSE of religion? Was there religion in that society BECAUSE it was a good society? Is there any connection between religion and the quality of your society at all?
What do you want from a society to begin with? No niggers? Christianity (and most other religions, I'm sure) doesn't care about your race as long as you're one of the faithful. No crime? There was crime even when our societies were deeply religious, and nobody can tell for sure whether any changes in crime are linked to religion. No promiscuity? The USSR was a very sexually repressed society even though atheism was its state religion.
At this point the only objective value I can see in religion is the tradition. It's akin to art, something that is a part of your country's history, something to preserve and practice regardless of its impact on the society or lack thereof. And I suspect there is no impact at all. You can freely substitute religion with state ideology, or life philosophy as brought to you by the likes of Juden Peterstein, so there's nothing inherent in religion that is absolutely necessary.
