Trump is dragging this out by asking for interview terms he knows Mueller won't accept. That way he can tell people he wants to meet, but that Mueller is just being unreasonable.

Mueller ends up issuing a subpoena and either Trump decides to finally put forth terms Mueller can accept and the subpoena will be withdrawn or they will fight the subpoena out in the courts and Trump will eventually have to sit for the interview anyway, but without his conditions.

There are two problems with that. In order for the supreme court to even matter with regard to a special counsel subpoena or the investigation in general, it would have to come before the supreme court. And in order for THAT to happen, it would have to pass through the other courts, all the way up, with each successively higher court agreeing to hear an appeal to the lower courts ruling.

Well they kinda do. Special counsel just knows it would be an annoying pain in the dick to have to prove in the courts constitutionally that the president has to answer to a subpoena, but it's generally known that it can be done. We just haven't set the precedent yet with a relevant case.

The last time it nearly came up was when Ken Starrs team served Bill Clinton with a subpoena, at which point Bill Clinton stopped fucking around and agreed to the original interview request rather than address the subpoena. Ken Starr, knowing that Clinton could easily fuck them around in court for years fighting the subpoena, decided to withdraw it and have a regular interview with Bill.
