Taking Stalingrad was needed as both an anchor for further offences and as a bulwark to defend the Caucuses.

The whole thing was a mess, I recon Hitler wanted to destroy the soviets more than anything but there was no way he would forgive France for the Treaty of Versailles. Best scenario would've been France Netherlands Belgium annexed, peace treaty with UK so Germany could focus everything to crush Russia. Sadly the UK thought it would be better to stick with France. I don't believe Hitler would be harsh against them or the French people after the war with Russia was won. What could've been a united victory for Europe against Russia and a restored pride for the Germanic people ended in a defeat which left Europe and even worse Germany in a mess, and it wouldn't even have been that bad if the Allies pushed forward to defeat Russia but sadly that didn't happen. I'd say his main fuckup was trying to depopulate the slavs and doubling down on Liebensraum instead of framing his invasion as an effort to liberate them from the murderous communists who'd stained their land with their own people's blood. A massive reduction in partisan sabotage as well as increased recruitment would definitely have helped turn the tide on the eastern front.
Also he should have let Italy screw the pooch in Greece and launched Barbarossa in the spring instead of summer to get more warm-weather time so his armored-vehicles wouldn't break down before they reached Moscow.
