How did a previously insignificant and widely mocked college degree become such a powerful political movement today?

We had "social media" like myspace, bebo, geocities and yahoo answers before this. I doubt twitter and tumblr was single handedly responsible to convince entire governments (even in third world countries) to promote muh LGBTQABCDEFG rights

I don't buy this theory.

A united population under some unified "ideal" would be paradoxically an even bigger threat to the government.

My theory is people started noticing that treating everyone equally was not helping blacks and other minorities do better at work or academics, so they started looking for scapegoats. And since they wouldn't accept the far-right answer of "it's their genetics", the only other logical explanation was that these groups were still held back somehow. However, discriminating on such a level requires larger-scale coordination, hence why leftists always talk about "oppressive power structures". It's not that they necessarily have evidence of their existence, it's that they're required to exist for the leftist worldview to make sense.
Meanwhile, the philosophy of equal treatment got put on the backburner until this "historical injustice" was corrected, which basically gave them a blank check to be increasingly more violent and unhinged in their quest to destroy the alleged "institution" responsible for keeping those poor underachieving minorities down.

In short, politicians and companies started adopting social justice because the alternative would be to admit that those evil racist nazis who they demonized for decades were right all along.
