As for conduct of battle they got rused, hard. They've captured plans that were basically repeat of Schlieffen plan with less optimistic goals, amd knowing they were lost, Germans (btw still not enthusiastic about independent armoured formations, not unlike other armies) got into gigantic dispute over how to conduct the battle now. Eventually von Mannstein managed to convince German chief of staff, gen. Halder and Hitler to accept his and Guderian's plan. The plan was a ruse. Since Germans had air superiority, they could fool French and British into thinking that attack on the Netherlands and Belgium was the main axis of attack. The main force was of course concentrated in Ardennes.
Now the deal is - Gamelin, Petain, Weygand, Georges, Manchin and other big French knew about Ardennes being dangerous sector. The so called Dyle plan was modified to put more soldiers there however nobody believed this was meant to be the main axis of attack (btw that it was possible axis of attack the french knew back in 1880's, there are 3 "gaps" in Belgium and that's the southernmost of them). The attack starts and Germans are fighting pretty tough battle in Sedan, especially considering quality of French troops there. Meanwhile in low countries German panzer divisions (2 of them, the remaining 6 were in Ardennes) were doing suicidal attacks on French-British-Belgian lines just to keep the appearance of it being the main axis of attack. After heavy fighting 2 best panzer divisions break through French defence at Sedan but French still have no idea that this is the main axis of attack. So they send their last reserves, 3 armoured divisions one by one. They get destroyed one by one. This is the moment Gamelin realised. Yeah he's on spot with conduct of battle but doesn't understand the details of the interwar period which are very well explained in a book titled "seeds of disaster" - which is pretty much the best resource on the topic for anglophones.

In this case the nails to the coffin was unwillingness to keep 2 years draft(much less reintroduce 3, instead French had 1 years draft) and their hostility towards professional military in age when war became much much more technical. Now you have known stories about French President calling for any kind of support from Britain (weirdly enough he called Churchill first even though I think he wasn't PM yet) and so called great encirclement ending in Dunkirk. After the great encirclement French lose majority of their tanks, trucks, modern artillery and other equipment. It's bad. Weygand (or Georges? I forgot) is called to replace Gamelin and when he arrives there from Syria he says. "If I knew it was this bad I would accept this position". All he can do is to change tactics(since the material centric methodical battle doesn't have material anymore), pioneer hedgehog defence (later used prominently in Vietnam by Americans and French alike) and eventually tell the government to sign capitulation.
The biggest failure point was obviously lack of airpower. While Germans performed the biggest tactical bombardment in WW2 in battle of Sedan(they didn't have time to wait for artillery), French couldn't get enough fighters to win at least temporary local air superiority and figure out where is the bulk of their enemy's forces located. This was something governments have realised before the war but took too long term approach to it. It started bearing fruit in the beginning of 1940 which meant that before those airplanes now built in mass numbers got to the front the battle was almost over(just so you realise - the newest French fighter - D520 or 420 I don't recall correctly went into production in mid 1939 and was made in around 70 units by January 1940 but until the capitulation 440 more were built.
We can talk all we want about two man crews in tanks etc. but they've lost because the ruse worked and the ruse worked because they've had no airpower

Germany already lost the war by Kursk, Patton himself acknowledged from start that the main purpose of launching Overlord and widening the Western Front was to prevent the USSR to take over all of Europe because they were not making enough progresses in Italy.
