Cats and dogs mostly to test the life support systems.
Once we are confident we can keep people alive during the flights, we send volunteers who sign up for a one way trip.
We pick only the absolute best skilled candidates.
They become the first colonists.
They spend their lives working to improve the hab systems and to make the colony self sustaining.
The selling point here is that the mars colony is like civilization insurance.
In case all of our worst fears come true and we end up fucking shit up here on earth we know that a self sufficient mars colony will carry on the legacy of human civilization.
