I think the most underappreciated aspect of it is that if it was anything like other branches of the military, it would spur technological advances that would eventually be utilized and perfected by private industries. Meteor mining, space ships, better satelites, etc.

In actuallity a Space based military isn't a bad idea.
There are several bonuses that come along with it.

1) Because the military will be involved, the US will spend more resources on space exploration, something that they haven't done since the cold war. When the USSR fell, a lot of the US space program was scrapped. Von Braun even set up a plan to place people on Mars.

2) The military arms race that will provide better technological results that will improve space travel and will make it more accessable to citizens in what, 20-50 years after the fact. For example: corporations that will eventuallyshoot for the stars will have an already existing protocol to enter and leave the atmosphere guiding space traffic and lowering the chance for accidents with other ships or junk.

3) Even tough I'm not a US citizen, don't live there and have some problems with the way the US bahaves in international politics for the past 50 years.
I'd rather have the USA be the dominant force in space as opposed to countries like China or Russia.

4) Since we don't have a hyper drive or wormhole technology like in sci-fi, colonies will be more independent than their historical counterparts. It's also pretty difficult to invade another planet when it takes your troops months to move. That gives the defender extra time to prepare.

It is probably just going to work on hardening electrical infrastructure against solar flares and possible EMP attacks at first. There is also a ton of space debris that could be a problem. Boring stuff that no other branch of the military gives a shit about, but still necessary.
