I work in robotics and automation in Detroit, and everywhere I've been, unskilled labour has been practically worthless since forever. We won't have to worry about those terribly expensive robots replacing minimum wage grunts - except possibly in industries run on 'free' money - i.e., government. They're currently only profitable for use in the most hazardous conditions doing jobs no one would want to do because those who tried were maimed and killed pretty regularly. The result is, every bot or clutch of bots has to have a human overseer. That's where our 'labourers' will go in the Automation Age. Bot-sitters for CEOs with GEDs.

The great battle of the 20th century was between Labor & Capital, and capital took a resounding victory. I think that there will always be menial jobs that aren’t worth the capital or maintenance of a machine, like the many there are today. Jobs will evolve but never go away conpletly. I like the idea of UBI but a society that doesn’t work becomes apathetic Economically.

People think its far in the future, its not. I was 14 years old and my parents had dial up internet. I'm 28 now and I have google in my fucking pocket,I can ask my phone any question and get an answer in .2 seconds. Many jobs will be automated in the next 5 - 10 years, mostly low skill. But the higher skilled ones will be the same eventually.

UBI becomes a something actually worth considering, since it would mean we live in an economy that can be mostly run on automation.

I went to a Nvidia incubator meetup recently where they we're showing off a few startups that they fund through their Inception program. One in Agriculture that were programming autonomous robots to pick up rocks in fields before they were seeded so that when it was time to harvest wheat, grains, etc they reduced the chances that a rock could potentially damage the combine which could potentially cost thousands of dollars in repairs. They were also working on drones that could pick produce that could prevent millions of dollars in revenue lost.

Another company was one named Fast Data IO (fastdata.io/) which promised to process data "At the speed of thought".

So yeah.. the future will be here soon
