The hatches were open because it was hotter than balls, and he sucked up the tiniest fragment in his nose (no, not jewish). The medic who tended to him after the excitement was over used a pair of tweezers to pluck out a tiny little piece of shrapnel. Since something had to be pulled out of his body, he qualified for and received a Purple Heart.
