Certain assets are protected from bankruptcy, including tax protected 401Ks and your house, if it has been paid off.
Now Boomers are fucking the economy again with this shit. They've racked up debt living it up, but if they have paid off their house and paid into their pensions, so declaring bankruptcy allows them to keep both while writing off their debt entirely.
They are basically laughing all the way to the retirement condo's golf course.

My Boomer parents both worked and are divorced now. They lost our home that was worth about 700k in a short sale. We didn't get a penny for it, and I was stuck living with my mom's shitty relatives for 2 years until I was able to move out on my own.
