Back in the 20th century,after the war people started worrying about Overpopulation.
A man named John Bumpass Calhoun who had a M.S. and a Ph.D,the subject of his thesis was the behaviours and routines of the Norway rat.
He conducted an experiment where some mice lived in a controlled environment with unlimited food,safety from predators and temperature control. The only thing they couldn't do was escape.
Now there are more details to it which would take several pharagraphs to write but basically there were several variations of those divided spaces. These variations led to differences in behavior patterns and to the concept of "behavioral sinks."

Summed up,females stopped caring for their children or making any at all,few male (Alphas) mice were able to dictate how things go there and mate with the remaining females. Some rats started isolating themselves by getting up earlier to eat by themselves and some starting showing pansexual behaviour.
This test was stopped after a certain period of time but it didn't stop there. A hidden from the public experiment was conducted on a much larger scale which delivered nearly the same results. (same rules applied,unlimited food,temperature control,no predators,imprisoned)
Those results were far more horrific with different stages >Stage A: Adjustement (day 0-105) The mice started to adjust,social order being established and their territories being marked. Breeding also started.
>Stage B: Exploitation (day 104-315) The mice doubled in number every 15 days since the younger ones grew to maturity and had offspring themselves until it stopped at day 315 where it started to slow down. At this moment the mice started slowly showing similar behaviour to the previous experiment (Alphas,outcasts,fewer children etc.)
Stage C: Stagnation (day 315-560) The outcasts started getting aggressive towards fellow mice and since there was no escape they endured the attacks (biting tails,scratching) At this time the "behavioral sink" started showing in the whole colony. Many social mice started sitting together and forming groups at food reserves while single mice went into corners,didn't move or simply didn't interact with anyone,they stopped eating.
The alphas who were older started dying off. They protected their territory and mates from any attacks or tresspassing but they grew weaker and exhausted. Their female mates started to become aggressive towards everything ,even their own infants oftend resulting in death. cont.

If they couldn't defend properly,they would move,leaving their children behind most of the time which meant certain death for most of them. At this stage (C) "societal organization" died off and the behaviour of everyone in the colony changed drastically.

Mice behavior breaks down in various ways. Mice die out because of how broken down their own society got, and because no normal male was born to fuck a female that could breed. Scary results repeated every time the experiment was tried.
Scariest thought: Could the same apply to humans, and if so, when do humans feel they are over populated, cause there's already humans behaving like the "too damn many humans alive at the same time".
