You know those e-mails you get saying that an African prince or the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria needs to move $10 million out of the country but they need your help to do it, and they'll give you $1 million if you give them $5000? Well, I used to respond to them, and I got increasingly good at it over the years.

My main gimmick was to "get fooled" (I'd make it look like their idea so) into traveling to Nigeria with all my money to meet them. The only problem was I couldn't get a flight to their local airport. I would "fly" to increasingly distant airports, making them travel there to meet me, and towards the end, even book hotels for me. I'd call the hotels to confirm the bookings (paid by the scammers) and use their IP addresses to confirm that they've traveled. This was before smartphones were a thing, so these scammers used internet cafes which made the IPs in their e-mails' headers local to wherever they were.

I also "made friends" with a lot of them by creating a fake Facebook account (again, this was ages ago when it was easy as signing up) and talking to them in Pidgin. I became the oga (gang boss) of a few of them just to fuck with them, and I also referred a lot of them to "victims that had already paid me" (just me on other accounts).

Good times. I could write a novel about it, but I don't want to bore you too much.

I've read that as well, but I think it's mostly just apologists for the abysmal education level in Nigeria and West Africa. Schools in Nigeria teach English, but most of these guys are functionally illiterate, and I can confirm that from having talked to them as "one of them." Their shitty letters do indeed select for people who are dumb, desperate or greedy, but I think that's more a happy coincidence than by design.

The biggest downfall for these scammers is that they think that they're scamming people dumber than them (and a lot of the times they are), so if you act dumb while also making them believe that your ideas are their original ideas, they'll believe and go with anything you suggest. I made that sound a lot simpler than it is, but it nonethelss doesn't take a mastermind to get good at it.
