Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who trounced Mr. Crowley, a longtime and powerful member of Congress from Queens, likened the offer to catcalling — the practice of whistling or making unwanted comments to women who pass by on the street.
In a Twitter post on Thursday night, she roundly rejected his proposal. “I don’t owe a response to unsolicited requests from men with bad intentions,” she said. “And also like catcalling, for some reason they feel entitled to one.”
In a phone interview on Friday, Mr. Shapiro rejected that there was anything sexist about his offer, saying that he could see himself making a similar offer to an older, male ideological opponent.
“I’m an Orthodox Jew and I have never catcalled a woman in my life,” he said. “I don’t know how they catcall down in Queens, but it must be weird.”
Fun fact: ultra orthodox Jews do NOT use secular courts and will shun you if you report sex crimes to a secular court. That means if a rabbi rapes you, too bad. This debate offer is different to catcalling in almost every way. For one, the offer is completely non-sexual, obviously. For another, you're a public figure who wants to take public office, a debate with a widely known political commentator is hardly something that should be unexpected. If your ideas and policies are so good, you should have no problem accepting the debate and absolutely trouncing him, right?
To be fair she is a candidate for high office and Shapiro is an e celebrity. She has no business paying him any attention. With that said, however, it goes to show her lack of credibility that it would even appear possible her engauging in a debate with Shapiro. That people see her as that low rate is an indication that she's not quite up to the job she wants. Even Liberals are cautious about her.
