Were there a handful of crematoriums? Yep. Millions were interned in POW camps at various times. They were good-sized cities and typhus (what Anne Frank died of towards the end of the war in April of 1945) was rampant. It was a necessity.

They go to the Auschwitz gas chambers and test the soil / walls for traces of the cyanide that is produced when the zyklon is fully reacted.
But the twist is, in that same report, the scientists admit that the cyanide is too volatile and would have flashed / reacted after all that time into a material called "ferric ferrocyanide", or "Prussian blue". They admittantly do not test for this in their report.
So it is either that they are not bothered to change their result in post, or they are being purposefully misleading in telling their readers faulty results, that would show that there is no traces of cyanide, rather than testing for the trace of ferric ferrocyanide instead.

This is the misleading part. When testing for hydrogen cyanide, the chemicals in their test are designed to react with the molecule HCN. This is a volatile acidic gas in its natural state, but can condense to a liquid when cooled or come into contact with solid surfaces.
On the other hand, "prussian blue" is a molecule Fe7(CN)18, which is a ferrous, crystallised mineral.
Due to both molecules having completely different chemical natures, it is impossible for the researchers to have tested for hydrogen cyanide, and have gotten results for prussian blue as well.

Prussian Blue is commonly known as a cheap, *nontoxic* pigment that can be mixed with water for painting. It was famously used in Van Gogh's Starry Night.

How do you recognise a foundation myth? nope. Auschwitz and Treblinka had been identified as places of mass murder during the war. It was also strongly suspected that it was by gas (or exhaust fumes or steam or electrocution - they were not sure how, but they knew that people went into rooms in large numbers and came out dead later - but by the war's end they were sure it was gas and or exhaust fumes)
Chelmno and Belzec and Sobibor were also identified long before the war ended.
