The very fact that a minimum wage is necessary speaks for the shitshow our economies have become. The fact that the state needs to set an arbitrary "minimum" wage, so that this industryless society can support a living for its lower bracket, which has been effectively reduced to the type of jobs that are created so people have something to do and not because they are needed, is a clear indication of that.
At first all will of course be "grand", because everyone has more money. The only ones who are fucked are the ones who used to earn in that bracket and slightly above beforehand.
Then, the companies start automating unnecessary positions that aren't worth 8.50$ an hour. Then, the inflation kicks in and the average person will suddenly find themselves in the same situation as before, they have more money but get the same amount for it.
But because the public is brain damaged they will then of course demand that the minimum wage be raised higher and higher to accommodate the new situation. This will then continue higher and higher, affecting more and more people, the more start to earn "minimum wage".
If you want the quickest rundown why it doesn't work just imagine we set the minimum wage to 1000$. Or a million. Would that make everyone millionaires? Or, even if you were to be paid that sum, would it just get you the equivalent of a bag of salted crackers and a bottle of pepsi?
The solution to the desolate state of the economy and the fact that no one earns enough anymore is the return of the industry and production, not the attempt to set artificial pretentious rules.
