It ends up being a lose-lose--you either believe you deserve to be in the box and it kills all hope and drive, or you are ostracized and your life made miserable for believing you shouldn't be in the box, or that you're even in the box in the first place. It is a maddening state of affairs that no one individual has any power to affect, and one with no clear way out apart from suicide.
