Revealed: How David Cameron had to wait THREE days to speak to Barack Obama after Assad's chemical attack on his own people, new book claims

Hundreds died after Assad unleashed sarin on his citizens in August 21, 2013

Prime Minister David Cameron wanted to strike Syria in retaliation for the attack

He called on President Obama but they couldn't secure a line until August 24

The delay crushed any hope for a swift response and eventually resulted in no action being taken against Assad, as the Syrian conflict continues five years on

David Cameron had to wait three days to speak to Barack Obama after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's horrifying chemical attack on his own people, a new book claims.

The former prime minister was on holiday in Cornwall when he learned Assad unleashed the deadly nerve agent sarin near Damascus, killing more than 1,000 people, many of whom were children, on Wednesday, August 21, 2013.

Outraged, Cameron sprang into action and began his attempt to drum up support for a show of force against Assad, calling on Obama as a key ally.

But the two leaders couldn't arrange for a secure line until three days later, delaying any hope for a swift response and eventually resulted with no action being taken, as the Syrian conflict continues to rage on five years later.

Islamic World News Analysis Group: After fierce and heavy attacks by Taliban militants on various towns of Ghzani province, Khwaja Omari district fell into Taliban hands.

Military Convoy Comes Under Attack While On Its Way To Ghazni

A convoy of military vehicles heading for Ghazni city came under attack in Sayad Abad district in Maidan Wardak at about 5.30pm local time on Sunday.

The convoy was from Paktia province and had traveled through Logar province into Wardak when the incident happened.

The ambush happened about 80km from Ghazni city.

There have so far been no reports of casualties but according to sources clashes between insurgents and security forces from the convoy are ongoing.

Paktia borders Ghazni but the direct route has been under Taliban control recently, said a source adding that the convoy was forced to take a long route – through Logar and Wardak provinces – in order to get to Ghazni.

The main highway through Ghazni, the Kabul-Kandahar highway – has also been closed to traffic by the Taliban for days – which has affected hundreds of motorists.

The Paktia convoy is not however the only convoy on its way to Ghazni. Another convoy of Afghan security forces and foreign troops left Kabul on Sunday afternoon for the embattled city.

With no clear channels of communication open with officials in Ghazni, social media has on Sunday carried countless reports of the perceived situation.

However, dispelling all rumors, officials have made it clear that the Taliban are not in control of the city nor are they in control of any government facilities.

On Sunday evening, Resolute Support’s Public Affairs Officer Lt. Colonel Martin O’Donnell also said Ghazni was under the control of the Afghan government.

He said: "The Afghan National Army strongly and swiftly reinforced Ghazni City after Afghan security thwarted Friday's Taliban attack. The city was relatively quiet Friday evening and people were observed moving freely on the streets. That said, clearing operations are ongoing and sporadic clashes are occurring.

“What we are seeing as the clearing operations continue is the Taliban attempting to harass Afghan forces and using civilians, who they show little regards toward, as cover.

“In addition to the initial strike, close-air support and B-1 show of presence on Friday, US forces conducted five strikes yesterday (Saturday) and 10 thus far today. The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces continue to hold their ground and maintain control of all government centers,” he said.

O’Donnell also said “tactically, operationally and strategically, the Taliban achieved nothing with this failed attack except another eye-catching, but inconsequential headline.”

He said: “The fact remains that the Taliban are unable to seize terrain and unable to match the Afghan security forces or our enablement, retreating once directly and decisively engaged."

The Afghan National Army’s 203 Corps spokesman Maj. Mohammad Farooq meanwhile said: "The city is under the complete control of Afghan security forces. Afghan National Army reinforcements have made their way to Ghazni city to help the Afghan National Police search and clear the city of insurgents that may still be hiding in the city."

However, communication lines with the city have been disconnected for about three days and little information has been gleaned in the time.

The Provincial Police Chief Farid Ahmad Mashal also told TOLOnews on Sunday afternoon that no government facilities in the city had fallen to the Taliban.

He said however that foreign fighters, including Pakistanis and Chechens, are involved in the battle for Ghazni.

Clearance operations are underway and house-to-house searches are being conducted, he said.

Taliban stormed Ghazni City – 148 kilometers southwest of Kabul – at around 1am Kabul time on Friday.

Insecurity recently increased dramatically in Ghazni province, which led to the Independent Election Commission delaying parliamentary elections in the province.

More than 90 Afghan officers and soldiers reportedly killed as the Taliban threatens to seize control of a key city south of Kabul

Taliban insurgents attacked police headquarters and other government buildings in Ghazni in central Afghanistan on Sunday and were threatening to seize control of the city, with the main highway now heavily mined, local lawmakers and residents said.

U.S. aircraft conducted at least four air strikes but details of the fighting were unclear as most of the city's telecoms masts were destroyed in fighting over recent days.

Mohammad Sharif Yaftali, Afghan army chief of staff, said the city was not under threat of collapse and heavy fighting was underway to push back the Taliban from city limits.

"Strategic locations and centers in the city are under the control of Afghan forces and the Taliban are hiding inside people's homes and shops and resisting," Yaftali told reporters at a news conference in Kabul.

But lawmakers from Ghazni who managed to talk to some residents said Taliban were in control of much of the city after launching an initial attack in the early hours of Friday.

"Only the governor's office, police headquarters and intelligence agency's compound are in the hands of the government and Taliban are pushing to take them," said Chaman Shah Ehtemadi, a lawmaker from Ghazni.

The attack on Ghazni, a strategic city on the main highway linking Kabul with Afghanistan's south, was the most serious blow to the government since the insurgents came close to overrunning the western city of Farah in May.

Mohammad Rahim Hasanyar, a member of the provincial council, said heavy fighting was continuing in several areas of the city and Afghan forces were in defense mode.

"No one knows what the exact situation is because there is no communication service," he said.

.

There was no confirmed word on casualties. Quoting a hospital official, Afghanistan's 1TV television reported more than 90 members of the security forces and 13 civilians had been killed, with more than 100 wounded. It said there had also been heavy Taliban casualties.

With the highway heavily mined to prevent reinforcements from arriving, residents were largely blocked inside but some who managed to escape across fields on the city's periphery said many government buildings were ablaze.

"There was burning and fire and dead bodies everywhere in the city," said Abdul Wakil, a local resident who escaped told Reuters at a checkpoint into Kabul.

Short videos circulating on social media, purported to be from Ghazni, show a number of heavily armed Taliban patrolling in the city with a large plume of smoke and flames coming out from the town.

"It is over and the city is taken," says a man standing outside his home, with several Taliban insurgents nearby.

The videos could not be independently verified by Reuters but they generated heavy commentary by social media users that underlined the shock caused by the attack.

U.S. military headquarters in Kabul said sporadic clashes were occurring and American aircraft had conducted five strikes on Saturday and four more on Sunday.

"The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces continue to hold their ground and maintain control of all government centers," Lt Col Martin O'Donnell, U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesman, said in an emailed statement.

The attack on Ghazni leaves the future of peace talks with the Taliban uncertain. The government had been considering a ceasefire over this month's Eid al Adha holiday to match a similar truce during June's Eid al Fitr holiday.

Turkey plans to build more ‘observation’ posts ahead of Syrian Army offensive in northern Syria

BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:45 P.M.) – Turkey has finalized their plans to build more ‘observation’ posts in northern Syria, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday.

According to the Reuters News Agency, Erdogan told his AK Party members that over a quarter million Syrians have returned to Syria after they were recapture.
Turkey has already established at least twelve agreed upon observation posts in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, and Hama.

The Turkish military has also constructed an illegal observation post inside the Jabal Al-Akrad region of the Latakia Governorate.
