It's true, ice cream sandwich. There were limpwristed leftists at home bitching constantly, politicians rotating out experienced soldiers because they didn't want to lose elections, and restrictions on targets in North Vietnam that made it impossible to destroy the enemy's capacity to fight.
We still had an extremely disproportionate kill count, and we even shattered the Viet Cong, forcing the NVA to involve itself more and more. If we wanted to, we could have conquered the country or stayed there indefinitely, but that would just have dragged us into a quagmire like Korea.
It was a failure, but it is a simple fact that we were not totally defeated. That's why it's not comparable to a country like Germany, which was overrun and split in half under occupation.
