more and more evidence is pointing to social media likes/views/followers/etc. being a total sham. there are now so many third-party actors working to artificially improve metrics that performance data is simply no longer reliable. sooner rather than later, companies are going to demand significantly lower pricing (if they don't stop using facebook/twitter entirely. when that happens, it will become impossible for facebook/twitter to be profitable.
the core of the internet economy is advertising. if prices become deflated, most of the sites/services you currently enjoy for free will have to shut down. it will be a disaster for everyone, and it's only a matter of time.
it would probably mean the end of Jow Forums. paid membership forums are the future
Andrew Robinson
It has no intrinsic value, it was not created out of necessity so there is in reality no demand for it.
Jonathan Carter
can you imagine if youtube went out of business, i think its become one of the top sources of media communication for people, that would be sort of nuts, but thats true too about bots and things like that inflating pretty much no value at all whatsoever into youtube and videos , hahahaha holy shit hahahahahaa
Luke Scott
>he doesn't have a Jow Forums pass
Josiah Torres
I block every fucking ad they wont get a cent from me.
Andrew Flores
>paid membership Plenty of better quality paid entertainment out there. You think internet forums are some kind of a lifeline for information?
Angel Rogers
No shit. Facebook just lost 20% of its stock value
Jacob Perry
is there? if Jow Forums was totally inaccessible unless you paid, i'd definitely do so. as an added benefit, it will keep out bots, shills, and turboplebs
Justin Ross
yes, many others share this view. it will only hasten the downfall (and that's a good thing)
Xavier Kelly
NYT has literally been caught with bot traffic reporting to defraud their investors and advertisers. I'm surprised they would risk opening themselves up to scrutiny in this way, but between this and the defense of sarah jeong even after Sulzberger was begging Trump to stop calling them enemy of the people they must be going scorched earth or anticipating some sort of major paradigm shift in the near future.
James Long
But you have to remember pajeets don't block ads and actually click them en masse, especially if they promise horny white women in their IP location.
Americans / westerners are a pain in the ass to them, they want SLAVES.
Elijah Ross
Have you never looked at the comments section on YouTube and wonder “gee it’s like a bunch of artificial intelligence (dumb) talking to each other - because none of he comments make sense
Jose Wood
high level, all ads originate from a product or service that is trying to get your money. but that path is not direct. let's say someone on facebook clicks on an ad that sends them to reddit. then that person clicks a reddit ad that sends them to youtube video.
in this sequence of events, facebook and reddit are earning money because of the possibility of someone clicking a youtube ad. all this money flying around in different directions, and it's all based on bullshit. short every publicly traded company that acts a "digital middleman"
Andrew Wilson
Literealy who fucking sees an ad and decides to actualy go buy the thing. I have never ever seen anyone do it and all of the ads are for some cancerous gadget.
John Butler
>will keep out bots if you only knew
Liam Phillips
>it will be a disaster for everyone, and it's only a matter of time. Just use decentralized services like Mastodon loser
Dylan Adams
It makes you more likely to buy [thing] if you have pre-existing familiarity with it at the moment of buying
Kayden Carter
Of course, that just means either/and of two things.
>since consumers have less control of their own devices than ever (when was the last time you heard of someone with a rooted phone or who didnt use Windows 10) the quantity of ads is going to increase and theyre gonna get shoved down your throat whether you like it or not >youll be forced to register all your IRL info and constantly be logged in your account so they can collect as much personal info on you and sell it to the best bidder
Alternative option >cryptos evolution allows you to tip publishers directly, already happening on some platforms but theyre not retard friendly yet
What worries me most about this is how hard Google and Facebook will fall. Honestly the alternative option is the best option but lets face it most people are either too lazy, cheap or dumb to pay for content. Another thing to worry about is the future growth prospects of companies, Google and Facebook have made a killing selling mostly worthless ad space to advertisers, for investors who got in early this was great news but now that that model is dying what will be the next tech boom?
Isnt the problem with most decentralized things terrible scaling?
Colton Ortiz
Are you fucking serious? The Internet was NEVER supposed to be TV 2.0 and the death of its profitability, meaning the death of social media cancer and normie shit is the absolute best thing that could happen.
No, it means a return to the original concept of Internet. Arcane little websites spread across the vastness of the digital landscape - the end of Normienet and the glorious rebirth of the wild west Internet we once loved.
Nathan Miller
peer to peer, free from censorship of hosting companies is the future
Samuel Rodriguez
goddamn t.v. had too much money left over in their coffers to manhandle internet companies with copyright shit and then injected all of the social media with their 2 minute hot takes from their shows
Jonathan Price
>the end of Normienet and the glorious rebirth of the wild west Internet we once loved. those days are never coming back. intelligence agencies / bad actors will never leave the internet under any circumstances. they poison everything
Asher Perry
if anything, copyright hasn't been strict enough. the movies/tv shows you watch online earn most of their money through television/dvds/theater runs. as more boomers start to pass away, the quality of entertainment will plummet. advertisers/governments will be the primary financiers of all projects since young people are offended by the idea of paying fair value for content
Go away OP. If we wanted a Jew York Times discussion board we would go to the same.
Ryan Robinson
literally as soon as i made my twitter account 10 years ago when it first started
Cameron Scott
reminder that tv/film stars and professional athletes are the ONLY reason americans aren't all viewed as psychopathic war mongerers. we hold what essentially amounts to a worldwide monopoly on entertainment, and it is our most powerful asset. remember that next time you think a world class athlete or actor is overpaid
