Ruralfag here. Although I don’t like (((NPR))), this article hits the nail on the head. I read the obituaries in my small town newspaper and I see a bunch of White people dying in their 30s or 40s. No cause of death is mentioned so that means (A) overdoses or (B) suicides.
We have no jobs unless you want to work at the Walmart or gas station so the kids here start drinking, smoking weed, and the next thing you know they are on meth and dead.

I haven't done any scientific surveys, but I read a lot of obits, too, and what I noticed was white people in their late teens and twenties who died "suddenly at home," or, again, no cause of death, although about one in ten times it will say "lost his long battle with addiction." One place to look for cause of death is where you can send donations, like the American Cancer Society, or Emmaus House (a rehab place.) The older ones don't seem to be killing themselves as much lately because there are more jobs. I think the younger ones are doing it because they've seen what kind of shit the jobs are.
I live in the upper Midwest and things are not like that here. Not that they aren’t south and east of here. If you have a pulse you can easily get a job paying $14+ an hour right now.
