Splitting the atom is definitely real, atomic power plants (I hate that they get called 'nuclear' plants) prove this. Fission is easy to initiate but very difficult to weaponize because it tends to fizzle out. As more & more heat is released by the fission process the fissile material tends to gasify and this makes it difficult to create the nigh-instantaneous chain reaction necessary to build a weapon.
