Here's the real deal. Republicans and democrats like to play games with voter-ID rules in order to give their side an advantage by determining which forms of ID will be accepted based on which groups are most likely to hold those forms of ID.

A system like Mexico has, where everyone is issued a free voter ID card by the central government would make the most sense, but this is never what is put forward.

Instead, the republicans want to severely limit which forms of ID are acceptable and democrats want to expand it greatly. Neither side wants the most fair and equitable solution of a federally issued, free voter-ID card for all Americans.

The proof is in the pudding. Attempts at a federal voter ID card keep getting fucked up for political reasons.

You end up with states with republican legislatures passing laws that cherrypick which kinds of ID can be used, and on the other hand you have democrats passing laws to make it so no ID is required.

Each side has their own little games they play to try to prevent a uniform photo voter-ID requirement at the federal level.

Then both sides would lose their power to play fuck-fuck games with ID requirements to try to get an advantage. But I'm not sure Trump could actually do that, I suspect it would have to be congress that does it. Which means the prospects are not very good at all.

Here's the problem with that. In order to vote you have to be registered, right? So let's say you or your friend walks up to an American polling place in a state with no photo-ID requirement and use an American citizens name to vote.

What do you think happens when the American citizen shows up and can prove their identity because they have ID, tax documents, etc?

Anecdotal evidence is neat, but in real life we catch people pulling that crap all the time. We have no reliable statistical evidence that it's a widespread problem, but we should still have a single, standard federal photo voter ID cars.

That's something everyone should be able to agree on, because it would effectively solve all of the problems that both sides complain about.
