In Rhodesia whites were always massively outnumbered. North Africa has always been white and is very livable for European whites. South Africa, in climate, is much closer to Europe and therefore pretty livable for Europeans.

But tropical Africa is utterly inhospitable to Europeans who will die of disease pretty quickly without modern medicine.

India's value was in its productive and somewhat civilized population. All the African colonies ultimately cost more money than they brought in. Colonialism was in large part a humanitarian project. They wanted to civilize these countries. If you look at the writings of the time it was all about that. Hospitals, schools, infrastructure, advanced agriculture, Christianity. Sure mining and such was another thing but really the driving force after the initial gold rush was compassion and missionary zeal. The companies who went there for profit for the most part went bankrupt after a few years. Not that you would know that from reading history books.
