user, that was a mistake in KJV when the author accidentally copied Matthew 4:4. Luke 4:4 is not supposed to have that verse; all the other translations correctly show the full verse in Matthew 4:4.

The issue is that they were both quoting Deut. 8:3, and Luke omitted part of it. But is it proper to "correct" Luke? I make no claim either way.

They say the best Bible is the one you will read. So to that extent, no.

However, newer translations do change or omit certain verses that can help in understanding different parts, though they are usually footnoted in other translations.

I think it’s generally fine, just be cautious about how liberally it gets translated. For example, it’s fine to translate into more modern English but it’s not OK to whitewash with “gender neutral” language to appease modern society (as an example only).

hey op, same boat. raised on NIV. later in life, reading shakespeare got me into reading KJV. Look up online about the connections between the two, it's kind of interesting (not sure if I buy it, but anyway thats why I started taking a look). NIV reads more like prose, KJV reads more like poetry, and it honestly does come across as a bit more beautiful.
All the same, since it's the bible and you maybe want something more like accurate (or at least, fair, or, at least, honestly presented so you can figure out why and how the translators went about making decisions and things)--if that's what you're after, I actually have been sort of interested in the NSV version in the last year or so.
To be honest, I hadn't been to any type of church in a very long while. When I did go back somewhat recently, new church had this NSV thing. At first I didn't like it because it was not the NIV and verses I knew by heart were different so it felt a bit wrong, but now I actually like it better.
The version the church i'm at uses has footnotes where they document the translation decisions, and it also has some information about diffefrnt places in the bible where various greek phrases were used in similar contexts so you can sort of compare and see for yourself. They also provide alternative translations along the way.
I don't have any more information about it than that, but after having this NSV one for a little bit, I sort of feel like the NIV (and the KJV, even worse with the KJV in fact), sort of hide some of that from the reader. I don't think have any reason to suspect it's on purpose or anything like that, but all the same, it's nice having it there and I use it more than I would have ever thought. Anyway, my 2 cents.
