Well the problem lies in monopolization, as seen in the current market. When you monopolize it, you can sell it for practically any price you want that buyers are willing to grudgingly pay, and no one can do anything. You can use the money you get to crush any opposition and prevent the idea of competition from happening. Without competition, of course there is no improvement resulting in bad products for high prices, as seen with internet companies. And even if you have a few competing companies, if there's only a couple, then competition doesn't work that well. Both companies will simply gradually and in sync just lower their quality and heighten their prices because that's in both of the companies interests, they lose nothing and gain more money and spend less.
A free market with competition is in concept a great idea, but nowadays huge corporations can monopolize which destroys this idea. The only way to prevent this is having laws and such to prevent monopolization, which is difficult as this is borderline socialism/communism which of course wouldn't result well. Perhaps laws should encompass, not the prevention of growth of these companies, but rather the protection of small companies wishing to compete, only to get stifled out? Anyway those are just my thoughts
