he worked at airports. got worn down by the lack of income from it, and decided to steal a passenger plan and eventually crash it, killing himself. he spoke to ground control for a long time while doing impressive aerial maneuvers, and seemed generally happy to be ending his life in this manner, regretful that he might inconvenience others, determined to only take his own life, and completely aware of affirmative action

He could have landed it, although it would have been a rough landing more than likely. In my opinion, one of his engines flamed out and he lost control of the plane at low altitude. He didn't know how to respond with proper rudder/throttle control, and he didn't know how to set the flaps properly in relation to his speed. I'm assuming he panicked, rotated the plane to counter the failing engine, and entered a stall due to the rotation and low speed. I'm very curious about the final moments myself.

There are two ways of looking at Richard's death:
1. The result of neurochemical malfunctioning, representing nothing beyond itself, an isolated case of depression relevant only to its immediate environment.
2. A symbolic expression of the state of White men in the 21st century.
The reason the second option is appealing is because there were no obvious reasons - beyond a poor wage in a dead end job - for him to commit suicide. He had a wife, friends, a close relationship with his mother and sisters. There is no way therefore of simply blaming his actions on some personal failing, as in the case of Elliot Rodger, Dylann Roof et al., who were social failures, romantic failures, and would not or could not find any form of employment.
I see Richard as the millenial White male writ large, and his death to me represents in part the fundamental sickness experienced by young White men in western nations today. He knew, in a casual and non-obsessive manner, that as a white man he was now afforded less value despite coming from a poor background. He knew that a sub-$15-an-hour wage could probably not allow for a family (his mentioning that he had "not enough to get by" when asked about his fuel leves is relevant IMO). His unselfconcious way of talking, good humour, man-to-man banter ("damnit Andrew...") and so on portray him as someone who has not turned inward in bitterness and hatred of the world, has not "gone his own way" in regards to women, and breaks his back in an unfilfilling job while developing himself in college at an older age, rather than giving up and becoming NEET. But, despite this, is still suicidal.
His suicide required intelligence (to know how to fly a plane without ever having tried), dignity (apologizing to Andrew and relatives), selflesness (not harming others), an appreciation for technical and aesthetic accomplishment (the barrel roll) and a yearning for the sublime (the moment of serenity). There is something about him which represents us all.
