Is the american college loan system like the UK loan system in that you don't actually pay it off as a loan but it is garnished as a percentage of your wage when you get a job?

For instance if I had a job I would have to pay 9% over anything I earn over 21k (I think it's 21k). So far I have paid back nothing of my nearly 60 grand loan and since I do not plan to get a job I never will.

In the American loan system an education loan is a form of nondischargable debt. This means that even if the debtor files for bankruptcy it is impossible to discharge. The only way out is payment. No matter how much is owed.

Follow a wave of mass defaulting on loans(prior to the Obama administrations limited student loan overall) the US began offering a more available system of Income Based Repayment. If a debtor makes under a certain income(In the US it's $12,500. Litterally poverty wages) the payment can be reduced to as little $50 a month. However above that the debtor usually pays 15-18% of their net monthly income. Prior to the Trump administrations own alterations to the student loan system, after 20 years of payments, regardless of amount, the loan would be forgiven. Under Trump, all forms of load forgiveness have quietly been restricted or eliminated.

At the moment most Americans between the ages of 18-35 are sitting on between $20k and $400k in student loan debt. In the years that follow it WILL have a massive impact on our economy as an entire generation loses what amounts to a home and auto loan paying for massively devalued degrees.

Get a job and save up. Go to CC for the first two years to save a few bucks. Don't waste your time on a useless degree.

Only universities are expensive as hell. They nickle and dime for nearly everything, even for things you don't bother with like athetlics. Community college is the smarter route as it allows you to maintain a part time or even full time job, get the classes you need done, and go out into the workforce for your degree. I make more than most universtity students who paid or got loans for their B.A. while I just went to a community college and worked.
Unless you get a full ride to a university, then it's a waste to go to one.

I make 15 dollars an hour just sitting around filling out forms at an art company while in college.

We have a similar government loan program in Australia as UK does and i find it insane that an 18 year old can click a button on a computer and commit themselves to a $50,000 loan at 20% interest for a humanities degree that will be automatically deducted from their McDonald's paycheque in 4 years time

This. I got in shit with my student loans, bad credit etc, got a good job finally and my credit is still shit. I make 80k a year and still can’t qualify to buy a house since they’re all 400k+ now. Thankfully the economy is about to tank so I am just saving all my cash and building my network.

The universities are a scam, they have niggers graduating who don't understand basic algebra or English grammar.
They make boatloads of money with admission fees and College Football, and since those are 'non-profit' they spend all the money on luxuries like stadiums that are bigger than those of Real Madrid or Manchester United.
