The Copiale cipher details part of an initiation ceremony into a group called the Oculists or something like where they are given a blank piece of paper and told to read from it, when they cant read it, their eyes are washed with a cloth, when they cant see it again they're given glasses and asked to try again, when that doesn't work they perform an operation on the eye by symbolically plucking an eyebrow. Lot's of eye stuff in secret societies, like the all-seeing eye in freemasonry. I think even the word Occult is related to eyes and seeing.

My take on it is that the eye stuff is a clue, you're meant to read the blank piece of paper with math, that if you were to fold it in half sideways and lengthways it would give you 4 corners of a diamond like an eye with equations for the curves and all sorts of fantastic numbers and geometry hidden when you expand on it. I think you're to meditate on the power of the paper to be a transmitter of knowledge, to think back on the history of the paper to Egypt, i think perhaps they intend the blank piece of paper to represent you as both a holder and transmitter of knowledge.
