It is likely that he still resides in the Schengen area, since there are (usually) no border checks.

Western Europe is really densely populated, even the 'remote' areas.
Long term stealth survival is going to be a real challenge, even if he's an expert.

Police was at a dead end, so they requested a broad set of people to come in for DNA research.
Jos Brech was in the files because he was interviewed as a passer-by.
Police didn't think too much of him at the time.
Now that he was called in for DNA collection he went missing.
That set off the red flag and they matched his DNA they found anyway.
Turned out it was a 100% match with material found on the body.

If you look closely, you can actually see him behind a tree in the top left of the image.
From what I understand they took his DNA to identify his corpse, in case some unidentified body shows up and he's still missing.
Probably standard practice with all missing persons.
And then the match probably showed up because they cross-check every DNA profile on record, not because they looked for that match in particular.

Next point, are there hunting clubs in the area he was last seen. Maybe hunters spotted some makeshift camp where he hid ? Would also help to identify which way he went, East or West. I would suspect West, because it would have been easier in February to go towards a warmer climate, especially if he has no money.
