If we didn't have an Electoral College, what's stopping a candidate from simply campaigning solely in the 4 largest U.S. cities and gaining tons of votes? Not only would it mean that states like New York and California would control American politics like Austria in the Holy Roman Empire, but it would mean that smaller states like Rhode Island and Nevada would be irrelevant in elections no matter what, and you'd end up in the same situation that started the American Civil War: Southern states felt that they didn't have equal representation in politics, and thus split from the Union so that they could have a say in what goes on in their country.

You can’t vote without faking identity as a US citizen, and extra votes are expunged or investigated. It’s not some American Idol “text who you want to win” endlessly type thing anywhere.

To ensure candidates campaigned everywhere and didn't just ignore small states and rural areas the framers of the Constitution made it so the winner was the person who won the most states, not the most votes. They even compromised on this and made it so states had more sway if they had more people (hence California having 55 electoral votes and Wisconsin having 3). Most "eccentricities" in the US laws and Constitution make sense when you remember it was designed to be a federation of states, and not a direct democracy.
Senators don't represent people, they represent States' governments and interests. Senators shouldn't be elected by vote; it should be left up to the states (and ideally they would be appointed by the state legislatures).

You need fake identification via giving a residence, and then have access to the database that stores what person is authorized to vote at what polling places. Then you need that person to not vote. Bussing around would null the votes, too, during final tally. This ensures people can vote and problems are cleansed, instead of down internet preventing an ID scanner from phoning the state database.
