My mother was a substitute teacher and para-profession at the local town's elementary school(she's retired now). She never needed any kind of degree or certificate to work at a school.

High school kids are stupid, horny, and lack the understanding of consequences. High school gives them duty and a place to go. Yes, the education is worthless but containing them in one area for a majority of the Day makes it worth it.

Every teacher I had from grammar to high school was shitty. You could take a teenager, hand him a few textbooks, and he could teach an American elementary or high school class. Teachers having low pay is a small portion of a larger, shitty mosaic that is the American education system.

There’s more money to be made in a mediocre private sector job than there is in education. If you find a well-educated American, it’s likely that he did things outside of school to get smart.

It's insisting that you teach to the test rather rpthan actually teaching things like critical thinking or fostering a love for learning. It's a systemic destruction of what education is supposed to be about that is driving teachers away. The good ones, anyway. When you have people who have been named Teacher of the Year hanging it up because of the deluge of bureaucratic red tape that keeps good people from doing their jobs, it's not the pay that's driving them away.

I don't know how it works in America but getting into teaching in Australia is ridiculously easy. When we finish highschool we get a number called an ATAR which basically determines what courses you can take (highest possible is 99.95, numbers like 99.50 get you into law and medicine). I got one just over 92 which got me into medical science, so its high but nowhere near good enough to get into top of the line courses. Teaching meanwhile doesn't even demand an ATAR of 70, so therefore somebody who might make a good teacher gets an atar of 85 (reasonably smart, but not a genius) and thinks "eww, I'm too smart for this" which in my opinion is why we have a shortage of our own, teaching is shunned as a profession for mediocre people who got mediocre marks. Is it easy to get into teaching in burger land?

The new generation of teachers are taught to be fanatics about the new approach, that they're changing the world with restorative justice and social justice. There's an attitude in the revolution the education system is currently undergoing that if a teacher's students fail it's because the teacher wasn't passionate enough and forgot their why. I believe they use this to artificially keep the salaries low.

And restorative justice is in the process of destroying what little was good about the public education system.

Whenever you consider teacher salary you have to divide by roughly 3/4 due to the summers, from that perspective teachers are drastically overpaid. For high school teachers it is even worse, in my high school there was roughly 3 weeks per semester of exams where teachers did fucking shit all except feed scantron machines. Teachers should also be liable for damages, like the time I had to see a psychologist for treatment of PTSD developed from harassment by a teacher who wasn't fired by an unaccountable and corrupt union racket system. In my state (NV) they couldn't get enough special ed teachers, despite promotional programs that trained anyone with a bachelor's and decent GPA. Teachers are underpaid and expected to spend their own money, and to meet with parents and doctors on their own time (unpaid)

Solution was to bring in a bunch of Filipinos, twice.

Getting a teaching license here depends on the state, but most requirements are ridiculously high. My sister for instance is a 4th Grade school teacher. She was required to get a regular 4-year degree in addition to that she had 2-years continuing college to earn teaching credentials. After that she had to serve as a Teachers Assistant for an additional 6-months. After this she finally began to teach but each year must take a certain number of college credit courses with at least one class in continuing teacher's ed.

It's pretty fucked.

About $300 each month towards healthcare. And slowly paying off the credit card which should be done by Dec.

That is a myth. In my district, Neshaminy, PA, the average teacher salary is over $100,000 per year. At 10 years, they max out at $106,000. Plus great benefits, a pension, and 3 weeks off. The area isn't that rich, and the school performance is ranked 250th out of 500 districts in the state. And teachers aren't really all that bright.

I got my loans paid off but I'm not sure I'd do it again.
